BOE Special Called Meeting

Notice to the Public and Press

The Granville County Board of Education will hold a Special Called Meeting on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at 7:00pm at the Granville County Expo Center, 4185 US-15, Oxford, NC 27565. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the actions taken by the Board at its December 2 meeting.

Members of the public are invited to view the open session via livestream. To join the livestream meeting, please use the following link: https://live.myvrspot.com/st?cid=MDhkZj.

Metal Detectors will be in use upon entry to the building. No bags will be permitted in the building.

Exceptional Children's Program

A program used at Granville County Public Schools by our Exceptional Children’s Department is Voices Together, which uses the power of music in school programs to help students thrive. The program used, Voices in Education, delivers a specialized music therapy model to schools and districts in North Carolina. Through weekly group sessions, students ages four to 21 are engaged, from pre-kindergarten through high school. Therefore, a creative and engaging path for students to grow in independence is provided to help students  become strong self-advocates, and fully participate in their communities.
The Voices in Education program provides targeted support where it's needed most. The focus is on students in Exceptional Children (EC) and Occupational Course of Study (OCS) classrooms. The music therapists use a structured, evidence-based approach to help students improve critical communication and social-emotional skills. They guide them through a series of interactive musical activities that promote learning and engagement.
The VOICES Music Therapy™ model helps students with diverse needs. Consequently, the therapists adapt each session to meet the specific goals of the group. Therapists engage students by using music to facilitate discussion, problem-solving, and emotional expression. This approach creates a safe and supportive environment for students to practice new skills. This practice enables them to successfully transition from school to a community work environment. GCPS is very happy to partner with Voices Together to support our students' growth through music!

The Annual AIG Open House will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the Mary Potter Center for Education in the Boardroom, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. This is a floating event open to parents/guardians of AIG Students in grades 3-8. An invitation will be shared with your child. We encourage parents/guardians of students who participate in our Talent Development program to attend as well.

  • Save the Date: November 16 - 22 is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week #hhweek. The GCPS STOP & Drop of Hope donation drive is year-long. If you would like to donate new clothing, toiletries, laundry times, gas cards, gift cards, or cash to support GCPS families that are experiencing homelessness, please contact the MKV Liaison at 252-425-9368. We hope to have an Empty Bowl project during this week. 

  • Correction/Update: The September NCDHHS newsletter resource link for free mental health support that was shared with parents is “peer-support” for teens, not professional support. I recently learned that GCPS does not endorse this website for teens. It was information for “parents only.”   

  • Repeat: All parents and youth who were identified last school year should let me know if you are still unhoused or if you now have stable, independent housing. Please email me today at hickst1@gcs.k12.nc.us.  
  • Repeat: Title 1 Nights began last week and will take place at Title 1 schools that offer information and engaging educational activities and opportunities for you and your entire family..
  • Repeat: If you are a McKinney-Vento identified family, and are interested in your school-age child attending the Boy & Girls Club at no cost, please email me. Buses pick up students from the following schools: Credle, WOXES, SSES, NGMS, and JFWebb.

Parent Engagement

  • Title 1 Nights began last week and will take place at Title 1 schools over the next few months. Last week at BSES, all students (and siblings) received passports and traveled around the world to 4 destinations during literacy night. Title 1 Nights offer information and engaging educational activities and opportunities for the entire family.
  • Parent Academy Sessions will take place virtually on Thursday from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm beginning October 23, 2025. Kory Hammett and Carolyn Buffaloe will lead the first academy which will be a “ParentSquare & Infinite Campus” session. There will be more information to come so Save the Date for Tuesday, October 23rd 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Parent Academy sessions will end in May, 2026.
