West Oxford Owl for April 24, 2026

It was a great week for adventures at West Oxford! We had a chance to welcome our future students at the start of their kindergarten adventure this week. PreK was visited by Zoo on the Move. Second grade explored the NC Zoo, learning about animal life cycles from birds to butterflies to mammals. Third and fourth grade went to the beach: touring Fort Fisher, searching for shark teeth, fishing off the pier, and dissecting squid!

We continually focus on preparing our students for the end of the year as we come down the final stretch of the year. You received progress reports last Thursday. First graders are measuring objects. Third grade is diving into types of landforms. Fourth grade is exploring the connections between fractions and decimals.

We have all kinds of exciting events coming up this week and next!
  • Fifth grade will be visiting their middle school on either April 23rd or 28th, with parent nights to follow at each school. You will receive a field trip form with the dates and times.
  • Teacher Appreciation Week is the week of May 4th!
  • Our students will be performing at Culture Fest on May 9th.
  • The EOGs will be May 12th, 13th, and 14th.
  • Awards assemblies will take place on May 19th (K at noon, 1st at 12:45, 2nd at 1:30) and 20th (PreK at 10, 4th at 12:45, 3rd at 1:30). Fifth grade promotion is May 22nd at 11:00.
  • Our final growth parade is May 22nd at 9:00.

It is enrollment season! All students enrolling in kindergarten can do so online here or come by the office for an enrollment packet.

I've been reading an excellent book on digital devices in schools as Granville County Schools evaluates the way we use technology. It's made me think about how we use devices in my home, and it might be worth pondering. If you have tech free days in your home, what do those look like? What non-tech activities do you enjoy as a family?
