West Oxford Owl for August 21, 2026

One of the most important things we do at the beginning of the year is to get to know your children. We start with learning their names, their interests, their personalities, and how the connect with others in the room. Additionally, we are learning their academic skills by collecting writing samples about themselves or on silly prompts. Students take formal and informal math and reading assessments, including the STAR tests we did this week. During specials, they run laps in PE and sing songs in Spanish. We are learning what they know so we give them the best education we can.

I had a chance to read with most classrooms this week. I read a newer book by Mo Willems, Me and Other Bunnies. It was a joy to talk about books with with the students. I am also sorting through job applications and hope to have positions posted on Wednesday. If your student is auditioning for the announcement team, and needs to practice, the West Oxford Pledge is here.

Our instruction starts promptly at 7:45, and all students who arrive on time receive a Merito dollar. We are teaching content until 2:55, so we encourage you to not check your child out early unless it is absolutely necessary. We do not want them to get behind!

We appreciate you working with us as we fine tune arrival and dismissal processes. Remember that only PreK students are walked inside. All other students kiss and go at the front door. Remember that we stay in our vehicles in car line.

Buy West Oxford swag here! Ordering has been extended to August 31st!

Find time in your evening routines to be reading every night and tracking that in your Reading Logs. If your child has not received their reading log, please reach out to their teacher. Reading aloud sets the foundation for a strong reader!
