West Oxford Owl for October 23, 2026

October is Fire Prevention Month, and our PreK classes went to the the Oxford Fire Department to be explore the ladder trucks as they learn from important community helpers. First grade tore through a corn maze looking for animal tracks to solve a mystery.  They came face to face with donkeys and goats before taking a hay ride around Dixon Farms.  The upper grades took their first NC Check Ins this week, and we are proud of the effort they put in to showing their learning.  Mr. Sumler worked hard as our first Principal of the Day this year.  Our last day of Rhythm and Movement club was Tuesday, but we will see the Raleigh Rockers again soon.  We are so thankful for this partnership with the Granville Arts Council!  It was free college application week, and our students showed up to represent their favorite schools on Thursday!

Red Ribbon Week is next week, and we. kick off Monday by wearing red as we commit to being drug free.  Tuesday, is pajama day, as we follow our dreams, not drugs.

Speaking of pajamas, join us on October 27 from 4:00–6:00 PM for our Pajama Reading Party, a free, school-wide learning adventure designed for the whole family! Families will begin their visit in designated Curriculum Rooms to learn what students are working on across grade levels. From there, students are encouraged to explore classrooms beyond their own grade level to read books, engage in discussions, and complete hands-on literacy activities with teachers and peers from around the school.

To add to the excitement, every student will receive a punch card at arrival. After participating in an activity in any classroom, students will earn a punch on their card—and 3 punches earns a trip to the Ice Cream Buffet! Teachers will host these engaging sessions in their classrooms using grade-level book selections connected to Global Competencies, creating a memorable experience that gets students and families excited about learning together.

Mark your calendars!
  • There is no school for students on November 3rd.
  • Fall Picture Day is November 4th.
  • Fall Festival is November 6th.  We are looking for volunteers, and donations of cakes for our silent auction.  Please let our PTO know if you can donate cake.

Take time to read a book this weekend, talking to your student about new words or content you learned together.  I just picked up a new murder mystery, so I'm hoping to get into it this weekend!
